Here at Ottawa Piano Movers*
we understand how important it is for a piano to sound the best it can sound, which is why we use only certified piano technicians in and around the Ottawa area. It is a well known fact that children who learn to play the piano at an early age are usually developmentally advanced to those that did not. A better memory, stronger verbal recollection and greater hand to eye coordination. Tuning your piano twice a year insures that this experience is enjoyable and that your child is developing a proper ‘musical ear’.
Piano tuning is the act of making minute adjustments to the tensions of the strings of a piano to properly align the intervals between their tones so that the instrument is in tune.
The meaning of the term in tune in the context of piano tuning is not simply a particular fixed set of pitches. Fine piano tuning requires an assessment of the interaction between notes, which is different for every piano, thus in practice requiring slightly different pitches from any theoretical standard. Pianos are usually tuned to a modified version of the system called equal temperament. In all systems of tuning, every pitch may be derived from its relationship to a chosen fixed pitch, which is usually A440.
The piano is probably the most complex of all musical instruments, with more than 500 working parts in the action alone and a combined tension on its strings of between 15 and 20 tons (that’s right–tons). So you can well imagine that tuning it correctly is far more difficult than tuning a clarinet or a cello, and takes a great deal more expertise.
Humidity and temperature are both key factors in the life of the piano, and must be maintained at proper levels to ensure proper aging of thewood, felt, and strings of the piano. Our facility is kept at one temperature level all year round. To provide extra protection, our storage area is far from outside walls and heat vents, or water sources of any kind. Warping and damage to hardwoods due to change in humidity and temperature under high string tension is certain to happen if your piano is being stored incorrectly. According to all modern piano manufacturer warranties, even in the home, pianos should be kept as far as possible from all sources that affect the change in temperature and humidity. We provide such a facility! We have over 100 pianos currently in our facility, some for a few weeks, some for several years. All pianos delivered after 1 year in our piano storage will receive a free tuning and assessment.
